Paulo Siqueira is a Brazilian photographer and videographer. He is a frequent contributor to National Geographic Brazil,the New York Times,and Marie Claire Brazil, and his work has appeared in Time, L’Espresso, and Geo, among other publications.

River Women of Brazil

It isn’t surprising that the women of Jararaca and its neighboring communities have turned to selling their bodies for a few liters of fuel; exchanging sex for food, money, and now diesel is something of a dark pastime of the region.

Anda, thirteen, is helped into a corset before going to a football game down the river. Aanda’s family lives in Vila Cruzal, which recently received electricity under a government program called “Luz para Todos” (Light for All)
