Howard P. Segal

Howard P. Segal is Bird Professor of History at the University of Maine, where he has taught since 1986. He specializes in the history of American technology and culture and in American utopianism. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton in American History. His revised dissertation, his first book, appeared as Technological Utopianism in American Culture (U.Chicago Press, 1985). His other books include Future Imperfect: The Mixed Blessings of American Technology (U.Mass. Press, 1994) and Recasting the Machine Age: Henry Ford’s Village Industries (U.Mass. Press, 2005). With Alan Marcus, he coauthored Technology in America: A Brief History (1985; second edition: Wadsworth, 1999). He is currently working on books about high-tech utopias in America and on the fate of the land-grant ethos amid high-tech higher education.
