Emily Clark Balch

Biography

Emily Clark Balch was the founding editor of the Reviewer, a literary magazine based in Richmond, Virginia, which debuted in 1921. She published a short story collection, Stuffed Peacocks (Knopf, 1927), and later the memoir Innocence Abroad (Knopf, 1931), an account of her time at the Reviewer. In 1955, VQR created the Emily Clark Balch Prizes for short stories and poetry, annual awards that continue today.
