Wallace Stegner was in his late twenties and just starting to establish himself in national publications when he sent this letter to VQR editor Lambert Davis. From 1938 to 1943, Stegner published three short stories and three book reviews in VQR. In 1940, he was offered an editorial position with the magazine for a term of one to two years. Stegner declined the position because of his recent appointment at Harvard University. He later moved to California and became the founding director of the creative-writing program at Stanford University.
